Gabe Burton (Josh Hutscherson) is a 10 year old boy who is in 5th grade and lives with his parents, Adam (Bradley Whitford) and Leslie (Cynthia Nixon), in Manhattan. Gabe's parents have been separated for a year and a half, but they still live together. Gabe is happy having fun with his friends, whether playing basketball at school or riding his small motorcycle around the neighborhood, without ever being interested in girls. However, the situation changes when he starts taking karate lessons, where he starts practicing with Rosemary Telesco (Charlie Ray), a childhood friend. Gabe falls in love with Rosemary, but cannot understand the new feelings he now has. Amid the confusion he feels, he discovers that Rosemary is about to leave for a summer camp and that she can be transferred to another school. That's when Gabe decides to put aside indecision and fight to stay close to his first love.
