In an authoritarian society of the future, young Johnny Rico decides to join the Armed Forces because this is the only way to become a "citizen" and stop being a mere civilian. He also does this because of his girlfriend Carmen, with whom he is in love, and who intends to pursue a career in flying combat ships. Rico ends up at Infantry, a less prestigious post, and finds himself at the forefront of a bloody war against alien insects that threaten Earth.
