Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider is a film director and womanizer choreographer, who works simultaneously on the editing of his film and on the rehearsals of a musical. In this he suffers a heart attack and, with his life by a thread, reviews moments of his life, transforming them in his imagination in musical numbers, his attention is disputed by 4 women: his girlfriend, ex-wife, daughter and Death, represented by a beautiful blonde dressed in white, who talks to him in a very thought-provoking way.
