Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) is a psychoanalyst who lives and works in the city of Ancona, Italy. He is married to Paola (Laura Morante) and has two children: girl Irene (Jasmine Trinca) and young Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice). His life goes by calmly, divided between the family and the office, until a tragedy completely upsets her. In order to respond to the urgent call of a patient, Giovanni fails to accompany his son to the beach and on this tour the boy drowns. The family, of course, deeply resents the death and Giovanni suffers a strong sense of remorse despite his wife's support.
