In the mid-19th century, the couple Kristina and Karl-Oskar live in a rural village in the interior of Sweden. But the small piece of land they own is practically infertile, which does not guarantee them good harvests. Once one of the children almost starved to death. That's when they decide to emigrate to the United States in the company of other families under the same conditions - and all led by a local priest. They sell what little they have and embark on a long journey. But some of these emigrants will never make it to the New World.
