Hank Grotowski (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son Sonny (Heath Ledger) work together in a prison located in the southern United States. Hank is extremely racist and has to deal with this feeling every day due to the presence of black people in prison. One of them, Lawrence Musgrove (Sean "Puffy" Combs), is periodically visited by his wife Leticia (Halle Berry). After being sentenced to death, Leticia goes on with her life together with her son Tyrell. However, two tragedies end up making the lives of Leticia and Hank cross.
