Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland) and Diane (Sandra Bullock) are a couple who decide to spend the holidays together, but suddenly she disappears at a gas station. Jeff has been looking for her for three years, to the point of becoming obsessed. After this period Rita (Nancy Travis), Jeff's current girlfriend, decides to help him find out what happened, as this way their relationship is becoming unsustainable. That's when evidence of Diane's whereabouts appears.
