A mysterious disease is spreading across the United States, with a high degree of mortality: about 50% of those infected end up dying. As the vast majority are homosexual, it is soon called "gay cancer" and, due to prejudice, does not receive due attention from the American government. Deciding to make people known about the AIDS epidemic, the writer Ned Weeks (Mark Ruffalo) decides to go to different media to talk about the topic. However, the anger contained in his statements frightens even his colleagues in the non-governmental organization that provides assistance to the infected. At his side, Ned has the support of doctor Emma Brokner (Julia Roberts), who is also alarmed by the seriousness of the situation.
