No family is truly normal, but the Hoover family extrapolates. The father developed a self-help method that is a failure, the eldest son took a vow of silence, the brother-in-law is a suicidal teacher and the grandfather was expelled from a nursing home for using heroin. Nothing works for the clan, until the youngest daughter, the clumsy Olive (Abigail Breslin), is invited to participate in a beauty contest for pre-teen girls. For three days they leave all their differences aside and unite to cross the country in a rusty yellow van.
