Cable operator Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), along with others, experiences immediate third-degree contact, witnessing the presence of aliens in the sky. After the event that changed his life, the inexplicable vision of a strange image like that of a mountain constantly disturbs him. Much to his family's despair, he is obsessed with finding out what that vision represents. Meanwhile, bizarre events are taking place around the world. Government officials now have immediate second-degree contacts discovering physical evidence of extra-terrestrial visits in the form of a World War II military aircraft and a military vessel that has been missing for decades. Roy continues to seek vision in a remote area where he and the agents follow clues that lead them to the location of immediate third-degree contacts.
