Georgia, 1909. In a small town Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a young girl aged 14 who was raped by her father, becomes the mother of two children. In addition to losing her ability to procreate, Celie is immediately separated from her children and the only person in the world who loves her, her sister, and is donated to "Mister" (Danny Glover), who treats her simultaneously as a slave and companion. Much of Mister's brutality comes from fueling a strong passion for Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), a sensual blues singer. Celie is very lonely and shares her sadness in letters (the only way to maintain sanity in a world where few listen to her), first with God and then with sister Nettie (Akosua Busia), a missionary in Africa. But when Shug, allied with strong Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), wife of Harpo (Willard E. Pugh), son of Mister, comes into her life, Celie reveals her brilliant spirit, becoming aware of her value and the possibilities that the world has for her offers.
