Chris (Charlie Sheen) is a young recruit newly arrived in an American battalion, in the midst of the Vietnam War. Idealistic, Chris was a volunteer to fight in the war because he believes that he must defend his country, just as his grandfather and father did in previous wars. But little by little, with the coexistence of the other recruits and the officers around him, he loses his innocence and begins to experience all the violence and madness of senseless carnage up close.
