Bronx, 1969. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) is a neurologist who got a job at a mental hospital. There he meets several patients who are apparently catatonic, but Sayer feels that they are only "asleep" and that if they are medicated in the right way they can be awakened. So research the subject well and come to the conclusion that L-DOPA, a new drug that was already being used for patients with Parkinson's disease, should be the ideal medication for these cases. However, by taking the matter to the director, he authorizes that only one patient be subjected to treatment. Sayer immediately chooses Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who for decades had been "asleep". Gradually Lowe recovers and this encourages Sayer to administer L-DOPA to other patients, under his supervision. Soon the patients show signs of improvement and are also anxious to make up for lost time. But, unfortunately, Lowe begins to experience strange and dangerous side effects
