It is January 6, 1904 and Dublin celebrates Kings Day in the midst of snow. At the home of sisters Morgan, Julia (Cathleen Delany) and Kate (Helena Carroll), a supper is offered to friends and relatives, right after a musical and poetic evening. Towards the end of the celebration, when most of the guests had already left, the baritone Bartell D'Arcy (Frank Patterson) begins to sing a sad song that reminds Gretta Conroy (Anjelica Huston) of an old passion, who has passed away. Surprised by the change in his wife's behavior, Gabriel (Donal McCann) learns the story of her old passion when they arrive at the hotel where they are staying.
