Will Keane (Richard Gere) is a 50-year-old playboy whose promise is never to make a serious commitment to a woman. When he meets Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder), a young woman who is half her age, he imagines that he will have another quick and easy romance with her. But nothing in their relationship is easy or fast. Despite the age difference, they end up falling madly in love and causing Will to abandon his decision to never make a love commitment. But Charlotte has a serious reason to refuse the proposal to have a relationship with Will that lasts forever: she is dying.
