In 1967, Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is a professor of physics at Midwestern University, who has just been informed that his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of her classmates, Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed), who, in her eyes, is someone far more interesting than her husband. Larry's family isn't that great either: his brother Arthur (Richard Kind) lives in his house and sleeps on the couch; his son Danny (Aaron Wolf) is a troubled and rebellious student; and her daughter Sarah (Jessica McManus) often takes money from her wallet to get a nose job. An anonymous letter also threatens his university career. Larry then decides to ask for advice from three different rabbis who may or may not help him, facing so many problems.
