1795. Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) is 20 years old and starts to stand out as a writer. While she is more interested in unraveling the world, her parents want her to soon marry a rich man, who can secure her status before society. The main candidate is mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), grandson of aristocrat Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith), but Jane is interested in trickster Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), whose intelligence and arrogance provoke her.
