The patriarch and matriarch of the Greenleaf family, James (Keith David) and Lady Mae (Lynn Whitfield), command one of the largest churches in the city of Memphis and exert an enormous influence on the members (mostly African-American) of their congregation. Her life is turned inside out when the mystery of her daughter Faith's death causes Grace (Merle Dandridge) to return to her family after 20 years away, in order to investigate her sister's fate.
