1st - Cherry Blossom Story: Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari met in primary school and became very close, but she had to move with her family to a region far from Tokyo. The two continue to exchange correspondence, and one day Takaki has to move - to Tagoshima, an island in Western Japan. Takaki decided to see Akari for the last time, undertaking a long train journey to Tochigi.
2nd - Cosmonaut: Years later, in Kagoshima, Sumita Kanae is in love with Takaki, her colleague, but he always seems to have his mind in a distant place. In addition to feeling depressed because she is apparently not reciprocated, Kanae is undecided about her future, postponing her choice of a university degree.
