In Los Angeles, psychopath Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) placed a bomb on a bus, which will explode if the vehicle speeds below 80 km / h. So Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves), a police officer, gets into the vehicle with him on the move and explains the situation to the passengers, but one of them, who had committed some kind of crime, feels persecuted and ends up causing an accidental shot, which injures the driver.
