Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti) is a sad man who lives alone. Until, one night, something happens that drastically changes your life. He finds in his building another person who is trying to hide from others, a mysterious young woman named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard), who lives between the passages under the pool. Surprised, Cleveland discovers that Story is a "narf", a kind of nymph in children's stories, and that she is chased by evil creatures, who want to prevent her from returning to her home world. In addition, Story has powers of perception, which allows her to see what will be the fate of the residents of the building in Cleveland. Together, Cleveland and the residents of her building band together to find a way to allow Story to return to her world.
