Buenos Aires, 2012. Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) is determined to ask for his retirement, due to disagreements over how Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) has led the Church. With the ticket already purchased for Rome, he is surprised at the invitation of the pope himself to visit him. Upon arriving, they begin a long conversation where they discuss not only the direction of Catholicism, but also affections and peculiarities of each person's personality.
