Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky), an 11-year-old girl, is obsessed with death, as her mother died and her father, Harry Sultenfuss (Dan Aykroyd), is a mortician who does not give him due attention. Vada is in love with Jake Bixler (Griffin Dunne), his English teacher, and in the summer is part of a poetry class just to impress him. At the same time she is very friendly with Thomas J. Sennett (Macaulay Culkin), a boy who is allergic to everything. When Harry hires Shelly DeVoto (Jamie Lee Curtis), a funeral makeup artist, and falls in love with her, Vada feels outraged and wants to do anything in her power to separate them.
