Sierra Leone, late 1990s. The country is in the midst of civil war, with constant conflicts between the government and the United Revolutionary Force (FUR). When a FUR troop invades a Mende village, fisherman Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) is separated from his family, who manages to escape. Solomon is taken to a diamond mining field, where he is forced to work. There he finds a pink diamond, which is about 100 carats. Solomon manages to hide it in a piece of cloth and bury it, but is discovered by a member of the FUR. At this very moment there is an attack by the government, which causes Solomon and several of those present to be arrested. Upon arriving at the jail there is Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a former Zimbabwe-born mercenary who is dedicated to smuggling diamonds into Liberia, from where they are sold to large corporations. Danny hears a FUR member accusing Solomon of hiding the diamond and is interested in the story. Leaving prison Danny makes Solomon leave too, proposing a deal: that he show where the diamond is hidden, in exchange for help so he can find his family. Solomon doesn't believe in Danny but, dead end, accepts the deal
