The famous illusionist Eisenheim (Edward Norton) haunts Vienna's audiences with his impressive magic show. His performances arouse the curiosity of one of Europe's most powerful and skeptical men, Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). Certain that magic is nothing but fraud, Leopold goes to the Eisenheim show willing to unmask him. When Leopold's fiancee Sophie (Jessica Biel) is called on stage to participate in a number, she recognizes in Eisenheim a youthful passion. They start a clandestine romance and the prince delegates to a police inspector (Paul Giamatti) the task of exposing the truth behind the magician's work. The latter, however, is preparing to execute the greatest of his illusions.
