Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Former scammer, before that he pretended to be a psychic and medium. Five years before the events of the pilot episode, Jane went on television and said her skills helped the police profile a serial killer named Red John. The latter, furious at the lie, took revenge by killing Patrick's wife and daughter. He then joined Agent Teresa Lisbon's team (Robin Tunney) and used his high observation skills to help find his family's killer.
