Dr. Ian Gray (Michael Pitt) is a scientist who researches the eye iris. Obsessed with discovering the origin of vision, he tries to prove that the development of the human eye is part of natural evolution, and he would not need a "smart designer" - that is, a divine figure to create it. He works with the help of his intern Karen (Brit Marling) and Kenny (Steven Yeun). One day, he meets Sofi (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), and the two fall in love, despite the difference in convictions. The rapprochement of the two will make Ian seek explanations beyond science to the mysteries that the human eye can keep
