In 1963, Frances Houseman, or "Baby", as the family calls it, a 17 year old girl, traveled with her parents, Marjorie and Jake Houseman and her sister Lisa to a resort in Catskills. Unlike Lisa, who thinks about clothes, Frances is an idealist and wants to be in the Peace Corps next summer studying the economies of Third World countries. So, she hopes this will be the last summer as a carefree teenager, but Baby doesn't get along with her older sister and is bored in trying to distract the older guests (she was involved in this situation by her father). Until one night Baby hears what seems to be a party sound in the employees' quarters (which the guests cannot access). She manages to enter the party thanks to an employee and discovers that the people there really enjoy dancing, which Max Kellerman, the owner of the hotel, does not allow. Baby even dances with Johnny Castle, a dance teacher, and soon falls in love with him. When Penny Johnson, Johnny's dance partner, becomes pregnant because she became involved with Robbie Gould, one of the waiters, Baby offers to learn how to dance and replace Penny, but Baby's father, when he finds out, doesn't like it because considers Johnny to be from another social class and Baby is too young to understand his feelings.
