The story told in The Shannara Chronicles takes place thousands of years in the future, at a time when technology no longer exists and when the practice of magic resurfaced in the world and later disappeared again. Elves lead society while humans are considered a sub-species. After hundreds of years of peace and calm, an army of demons threatens to escape from prison, known as Ellcrys, a tree of death, and consequently promote an apocalyptic war. Three heroes will be responsible for embarking on a dangerous mission to restore order in the Four Lands and gain support to overcome the demons. They are: Amberle, an elven princess, Will, a hybrid of elf and human, and the human Eretria.
