Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) is a legendary rescue swimmer who becomes the sole survivor of a missing accident caused by a heavy storm. He is taken to teach at the Elite School, a training program that aims to transform fearless young recruits into the best rescue swimmers. Still shaken by the failure in the accident, Randall decides to drop the training program and apply his own methods of work. He soon falls out with Jake Fisher (Ashton Kutcher), an arrogant swimming champion, who is in his class. Randall sees potential in Fisher to become a great rescue swimmer, if he manages to balance his unpaid talent with the emotional side and dedication that the task requires. On his first rescue mission in the turbulent waters of the Bering Sea in Alaska, Fisher learns what it's really like to risk everything at work
