Richmond, California, 1999. The owner of a sporting goods store, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson), agrees to be the basketball coach at his old school, where he set records and is in a poor area of the city. To the surprise of many, he imposes a strict regime, in which students who wanted to join the team had to sign a contract that included respectful behavior, an appropriate way of dressing and having good grades in all subjects. The initial resistance of the young people ends and the team under the leadership of Carter is becoming unbeatable. When the team's behavior is far below desirable, Carter discovers that many of his players are performing very poorly in the classroom. So Carter takes an attitude that amazes the team, the school and the community.
