A twelve-year-old girl (Jena Malone) and a boy of seven (Liam Aiken), children of separated parents, do not accept their father's new girlfriend (Ed Harris), a beautiful and renowned photographer (Julia Roberts). The boy still tolerates the situation, but the teenager does not accept the separation and the fact that her father and girlfriend live together, as this means that her parents' chances of reconciliation become almost nil. In turn, the children's mother (Susan Sarandon) still feeds this fight, making the genre "perfect mother".
