Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) meet on a flight that crosses the United States. He is a recent graduate who seeks to follow a strict schedule for his life, so that he can achieve professional success as quickly as possible and also find the love of his life. She is spontaneous and undisciplined, the type who prefers to see where life leads rather than making plans for the future. Oliver and Emily immediately feel attracted to each other, but the characteristics of both are incompatible. During the next seven years they meet periodically, but everything seems to conspire so that they are always apart.
