Anderson, South Carolina, 1976, at T. L. Hanna High School. Harold Jones (Ed Harris) is the local football coach who is so involved in preparing the team that he rarely spends time with his daughter, Mary Helen (Sarah Drew), or his wife, Linda (Debra Winger). Jones meets a "slow" young man, James Robert Kennedy (Cuba Gooding Jr.), but Jones or anyone else knew his name, as he did not speak and just wandered around the training ground. Jones worries about the young man when some of the players on the team play a bad joke, which terrified James. Trying to make up for what they had done to the young man, Jones puts him under his protection, in addition to giving him an occupation. As I still didn't know his name and the fact that he likes radio, it started to be called Radio. But no one knew that, at least in part, the reason for Jones' concern is that he tried not to repeat an omission he had committed when he was a boy.
