At the age of six, Gavino is forced by his father to abandon his studies to work in the field, taking care of sheep. All his attempts to change his life are aborted by the patriarch's ignorance and violence. At twenty, still illiterate, Gavino ends up joining the army, where he can finally acquire some basic knowledge. Renouncing his military career, he returns to his homeland to continue studying. However, the shock with the father is inevitable. Based on the autobiographical novel by Gavino Ledda. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival 1977.
