1979. Iran is on the boil, with Ayatollah Khomeini coming to power. As the former shah gained political asylum in the United States, which had supported his government of oppression of the Iranian people, there are several protests against the Americans on the streets of Tehran. One of them takes place in front of the country's embassy, ​​which has just been invaded. Six American diplomats manage to escape from the site shortly before the invasion, taking refuge at the Canadian ambassador's home. There they live for months, in absolute secrecy, while the CIA is looking for a way to get them out of the country safely. The best option is presented by Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), an exfiltration expert, who suggests that a Hollywood production be used as a front for the operation. Taking advantage of the success of films like "Star Wars" and "The Battle of the Planet of the Apes", the idea is to create a fake film, the science fiction Argo, which would use Iran's desert landscapes as a location. The project moves forward with the help of producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) and makeup artist John Chambers (John Goodman), who know how Hollywood works.
