Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) is an experienced naval commander, who agrees to work with a new team on a mission to deliver goods and food to the Somali people. Right at the beginning of the journey, he receives the message that pirates have frequently been active in the seas where they must pass. The situation does not take long to materialize, when two boats arrive close to the freighter, with eight armed Somalis, demanding all the money on board. An initial strategy causes the attackers to retreat, only to return the next day. Although Phillips uses all possible procedures to disperse enemies, they manage to get on board, threatening everyone's lives. When he thinks he has managed to negotiate with the pirates, the commander is taken hostage in a small boat. A long and tense negotiation begins between the kidnappers and the American special services, to try to save the captain before it's too late
