Iris (Kate Winslet) writes a well-known wedding column in the London Daily Telegraph. She is in love with Jasper (Rufus Sewell), but soon finds out that he is about to marry another. Far away, in Los Angeles, is Amanda (Cameron Diaz), owner of a thriving advertising agency specializing in the production of movie trailers. After discovering that her boyfriend, Ethan (Edward Burns), has not been faithful, Amanda finds on the internet a website that specializes in home exchange. She and Iris get in touch and arrange the exchange. Soon the change will reflect on their love life, with Iris meeting Miles (Jack Black), a film composer, and Amanda getting involved with Graham (Jude Law), Iris's brother.
