Cuernavaca, Mexico, 1938. Geoffrey Firmin (Albert Finney), a former British consul, becomes an alcoholic after separating from Yvonne Firmin (Jacqueline Bisset) and decides to remain living in Mexico with his half brother, Hugh Firmin (Anthony Andrews), the pivot of the separation. Geoffrey always awaits the woman's return and, on All Souls' Day, she suddenly returns, with the purpose of resuming her marriage. However, the marks of separation were greater than she imagined.
