Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is an aspiring writer who travels to Italy alongside fiancé Victor (Gael García Bernal), who dreams of having her own restaurant. In Verona, where the story of Romeo and Juliet took place, perfect for an early honeymoon, Sophie ends up realizing that her fiance is more interested in the suppliers for her restaurant than in her. In the city he discovers an old love letter and joins a group of volunteers who respond to these amorous missives. To his surprise, the sender Claire Smith (Vanessa Redgrave) listens to the advice given in the reply and goes to look for Lorenzo, with whom she fell in love in her youth. But there are many Italians with the same name, and Sophie shows an interest in helping her with the task, displeasing her grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan), who had already failed this crazy widow grandmother's adventure.
