California. Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek) is a young woman who has just landed a job at an elderly spa. Mildred "Millie" Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall), who already works at the site, is in charge of advising Pinky on the service. She falls in love with Millie and soon becomes friends with her. Ironically, no one likes her, but Millie tries to convey the image of being very popular. Millie shares her apartment with a colleague, but when she gets married she starts to share the apartment with Pinky. Pinky becomes increasingly dependent on Millie, but the obsessive bond threatens to break when she sees that Millie brought Edgar Hart (Robert Fortier) to the apartment, a cowboy who is the husband of Willie Hart (Janice Rule), a local artist, who is pregnant. This provokes a strong discussion between Pinky and Millie, which generates a serious fact that, in turn, provokes a great change of behavior of both.
