Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) leads a peaceful and happy life in the small town of Millbrook, Indiana, where he lives with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and their two children. One day this routine of calm is interrupted when Tom manages to prevent a robbery in his restaurant. Realizing the danger, Tom anticipates and manages to save his clients and friends and, in self-defense, kills two criminals. Considered a hero, Tom has had his life completely transformed since then. The media follows him, which forces him to speak to her regularly and makes him want his life to return to its former lull. Then Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) appears in his life, a mysterious man who believes that Tom has done him harm in the past.
