Rannulph Junnah (Matt Damon) is Savannah's best golfer. He has a good life and his girlfriend (whom he ends up marrying) Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron is the daughter of the richest landowner in the region. But World War I arrives and Rannulph goes to fight in Europe, becoming the only one survivor of a dangerous mission. After this fact Junnah did not return to Savannah for fifteen years. In 1930, he returned to the city and John Invergordon (Harve Presnell), Adele's father, had committed suicide during the Depression because he had spent all his money building a huge golf course, debts had accumulated and, due to the huge crisis that the country was experiencing, the opportunities to recover the invested capital had greatly decreased. Adele is pressured by tax collectors to sell the golf course to pay her father's debts in full, but she refuses to make such an extreme decision and believes that the right thing is to promote a great match, with Bobby Jones (Joel Gretsch) and Walter Hagen (Bruce McGill), the two biggest other players of the moment, who would dispute a prize of 10 thousand dollars. This should make people who still have money to play in Savannah, but the population insists on having a local representative at the tournament. Rannulph Junnah is the chosen one, but he is now an alcoholic who lost his swing fifteen years ago. Initially he rejects the offer because he lost his ability, but suddenly Bagger Vance (Will Smith) appears, who offers to be his caddy for just five dollars and help Junnah recover his true balance and manages to make Rannulph decide to participate in the big game.
