Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman), a New York detective, goes to Marseille, France, in an attempt to capture Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey), a drug dealer who escaped between his fingers when he went to do a "business" in New York. To complicate the mission, Doyle does not speak French and Detective Henri Barthelemy (Bernard Fresson) is not very happy with Jimmy's presence, saying that Marseille is not New York. Doyle soon feels this on his skin when Charnier's gang captures him, leaving him confined to a decadent hotel room. There, the detective, according to Alain, is drugged several times, in order to make him addicted. That way you wouldn't even have to kill him, as an addicted detective would be expelled from the police.
