On a day during spring break. Araragi Koyomi, a sophomore at Naoetsu High School, befriends Hanekawa Tsubasa, the most exemplary student at the school. Tsubasa mentions a rumor about a "blonde vampire" who has been spotted in the vicinity of her town recently. Koyomi, who is normally antisocial, begins to like Tsubasa's personality. That night, during an outburst, Koyomi encounters this rumored vampire: she is Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, also known as the "Queen of Apparitions." The golden-eyed, blonde vampire cries out for Koyomi to save her as she finds herself in a pool of her own blood and all four of her limbs severed. Kiss-shot asks Koyomi to give her his blood in order to save his life, and when he does, the next moment he wakes up, Koyomi finds himself reborn as a vampire. As Koyomi struggles to accept his existence, Kiss-shot whispers, "Welcome to the world of the night."
