Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is close to completing his three-year contract with the company Lunar Industries, which mines Earth's primary source of energy on the dark side of the Moon. Sam's only company is the base's vigilant computer called Gerty ( voiced by Kevin Spacey). All this isolation is making itself felt in Sam's life. His only connection to the outside world are messages from his wife and daughter sent via satellite. He longs for the moment to return home, but a terrible accident on the lunar surface leads to a disturbing discovery that contributes to his growing sense of paranoia and fragmentation at such a distance from home.
