Rome, May 6, 1938. Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler met to seal the political union that, in the following year, would lead the world to World War II. Virtually the entire population will see this event, including Antonietta's fascist husband (Sophia Loren), a lonely housewife who accidentally meets Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), her neighbor, when her pet bird runs away and she finds him perched on the window neighbor. Antonietta had never spoken to Gabrielle, who had recently been fired from the radio where he worked for being a homosexual. She, in turn, was an unhappy and insecure wife because she did not have a professional background. Gradually the two develop a very special kind of friendship.
